In China, a country with a history stretching back thousands of years, ‘seniors’ participate in meetings with caution; they don’t give anything away until the very end. They have the final say. They are the ‘final boss’ and act as such, and everyone at the table knows it. My role at H&H is very much the same. The young people – because in this company everyone except me is young and talented – let me take the lead, more out of respect for my grey hair than for my knowledge of the digital world. But when it comes to important decisions, I have the final say. For example, when choosing the Christmas menu.

Always on the lookout for big fish. I try to swim against the online tide to bring a more personal touch to our relationships with clients. The battle in B2B (Business to Business) isn’t fought solely by surfing the internet, which is why we need to master strategies such as direct engagement and face-to-face interaction. Here, a lead isn’t just a ‘click’ or a ‘like’; here, it’s Pedro García, whom you need to speak to directly (Direct Marketing) to sell him your services or products.

Every day in the ring, battling it out with CSS, WordPress, JS and other challengers – whom we at Houser & Houser undoubtedly defeat time and time again. My strength – and that of my colleagues – lies in our ability to adapt and be ‘responsive’ to all our clients, whether they’re large or small, because both have their own specific needs. As an intrepid explorer of the world, my restless spirit and love of adventure drive me to constantly seek out the latest developments. For me, digital marketing is a vast and fascinating territory to explore, and every new insight is an opportunity to delve even deeper and gain a better understanding of the ecosystem around us.

People say I’m all talk, and that might well be true, though to tell the truth I do a few other things as well. I draw up invoices, prepare reports, manage human resources, handle the day-to-day running of various accounts, make the payments and deal with whatever else comes up – and in between all that, I also deal in smoke, lots of smoke. Mind you, I don’t sell just any kind of smoke. No polluting smoke that chokes the cities; I sell the kind of smoke the Arapaho Indians used to communicate creatively over great distances – colourful, aromatic smoke to find creative solutions to each client’s needs.

Although my personal sphere of influence is virtually non-existent, I am in no doubt that, these days, genuine influencers are crucial for many brands. Online, this phenomenon is even more pronounced, as social media, video channels, blogs and new platforms emerging every day enable these people (or sometimes personalities) to share their opinions and work and reach their community. And that’s where we come in, connecting the brand, the influencer and their followers to create campaigns that benefit everyone.
